How Much Life Insurance Do You Need? The DIME Method, Explained

The DIME method (Debt, Income, Mortgage, Education) turns "how much coverage?" into simple arithmetic. Walk through it step by step, with a worked example and a free calculator.

The short answer

The DIME method estimates how much life insurance you need by adding four numbers (Debt, Income (annual income × years your family needs it), Mortgage balance, and Education costs), then subtracting savings and coverage you already have. The result is a coverage target tied to your real obligations.

“How much life insurance do I need?” is the single most common question we hear, and the honest answer isn’t a slogan, it’s arithmetic. Here’s the whole method, with a worked example you can copy.

What does DIME stand for?

  • D, Debt. Everything except the mortgage: car loans, credit cards, personal and student loans (some federal student loans discharge at death; many private ones don’t). Add a cushion for final expenses: funerals with burial have run a national median of roughly $8,000 to $9,000 in recent years, per the National Funeral Directors Association.
  • I, Income. Annual income × the number of years your family would need it replaced. A common choice is until the youngest child is independent, often 10 to 20 years.
  • M, Mortgage. The payoff balance, so the house is never in question. (If rent is your reality, use several years of rent instead.)
  • E, Education. What you intend to provide per child: trade school, in-state tuition, or more. Pick the number that matches your intent, not a headline.

What does a DIME calculation look like?

Meet a hypothetical family: $60,000 income, two kids (8 and 10), $180,000 left on the mortgage, a $12,000 car loan, $8,000 in cards, and a goal of $40,000 per kid for school. They want income covered for 12 years and hold $30,000 in savings plus a $50,000 policy through work.

DIME worked example
ComponentMathAmount
Debt + final expenses$12,000 + $8,000 + $10,000 cushion$30,000
Income replacement$60,000 × 12 years$720,000
Mortgage payoffbalance$180,000
Education$40,000 × 2 kids$80,000
SubtotalD + I + M + E$1,010,000
Minus savings + existing coverage$30,000 + $50,000− $80,000
Coverage target≈ $930,000

Numbers like that surprise people, until you remember it’s a decade-plus of a family’s entire financial life. And because term insurance prices a large death benefit efficiently (see term vs. whole life), a target like this is usually far more affordable than expected.

Skip the hand math. Our free DIME calculator runs these steps in about 60 seconds and gives you a number to bring to your quote.

Three refinements worth making

  • Round up, not down. Coverage bands often price in steps; the next band up sometimes costs little more.
  • Insure both parents. Including the one without the paycheck: replacing childcare and household work is expensive (see the FAQ below).
  • Re-run it after life events. The method is only as current as its inputs.
